Yo!

So some of you might not know (but now ya know) that Mad Anthony from The Drastics has been doing live dub off a cassette deck (as inspired by the man Dub Robot) at shows and parties over the later part of this year. We've been taking the plethora of riddims recorded over the years at Drastics HQ (aka Dirty North), dumping it onto that sweet 1/8" of tape and bringing the dub-of-many to the masses. It does sound surprisingly fat.

Well here's a snippet of a brand new Drastics track we recorded this fall given the ol' live dub treatment. Dumb Hole (A Sonic Black Hole) features Chris (bass), Anthony (drums, keys) & Luke (guitar) on a hard mixdown mixed with sweet 80s reggae fashion. Literally though, fashion.

Years ago, my boy Marty hooked me a sampler called "A Fashion Statement" .. basically a label sampler from "Fashion Records" .. served as a good introduction to the world of British/Jamaican DJs and the style of the era. This track is on it and up until today had no idea there was a sweet video for it ...

The boys in The Pinstripes posted this video a few weeks ago, but it's still some awesome footage .. Tippa Irie and Saxon Sound live on British TV .. not sure what program ... Worth it just for his little dance everytime the chorus drops!

Ninjaman VS Supercat .. I've had the bootleg audio of this for a while and never knew there was accompanying video .. I love Ninjaman, and he comes pretty correct in this battle ... the crowd definitely thinks so ... Supercat definitely "fights" dirty calling Ninjaman a pussy over and over again while Ninja takes the higher route .. I know its from '91 but it's still a killah!

This is the only footage of Larry Young I could find online ... he's playing with Tony Williams and is the guy dressed like he just got a camel caravan. But seriously, if ya'll don't know bout Larry Young you better get hip. I've heard alot of critics call him the "John Coltrane" of the Hammond .. wait for that beat to drop at the 4 minute mark!

I think because of Jimmy Smiths omnipresence in the world of the Hammond Organ, it's easy to not give him the attention he warrants .. and sure, he put out a ton of cheesy and/or boring albums in the late 70s and 80s (I know, I have most of them) .. but back in '64 he was still working it, hard. Check out at 4:07 (when he starts holding that F key down) how much he does with 4 fingers .... all the while still copping the bassline ... unreal.
